Who I Choose "Healing" Over "Cure"
This is just my opinion. Please embrace the beliefs and perspectives that best serve you.
“Healing” vs “Curing”
When someone receives a breast cancer diagnosis, the word cure can feel like the holy grail, the end goal, the moment everything returns to “normal.” Medical teams, pharmaceutical ads, and treatment protocols often position curing as the centerpiece of hope.
But as a survivor, advocate, and someone who has walked this path, I want to share an important perspective: I choose to focus on healing rather than curing, and here’s why.
Your New Pink Paradigm: Healing on Your Terms
At Your New Pink Paradigm, curing isn’t excluded. Instead, we champion a full-spectrum approach that supports healing on your terms — personalized, holistic, and empowering.
The Limitations of “Curing”
Curing is typically a clinical term. It suggests a fix, a definitive eradication of disease, often through medical intervention.
And while lifesaving treatments are essential — and can lead to remission or complete cancer removal — the language of curing often points to a single endpoint defined by tests or scans. It doesn’t always include the emotional, mental, financial, or spiritual state of the person living through it.
The “cure” concept can also position survivors as passive recipients — people who must rely solely on doctors, drugs, or technology to restore health.
At times, it can feel like your well-being is out of your hands, tied to the success of treatments developed and marketed within an industry that also has profits and future clinical outcomes in mind. That dynamic can leave survivors feeling small, powerless, or at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
Healing: A Holistic, Personal, and Empowering Journey
Healing is a broader and more comprehensive concept. It’s about restoring wholeness — not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and even financially.
Healing recognizes that every survivor’s journey is unique. It’s not a destination marked by a test result, but a process of reclaiming your whole self.
When we talk about healing, we embrace:
-
Mind: Addressing anxiety, depression, and trauma, and building resilience and peace through tools like mindfulness, community, or therapy.
-
Body: Nourishing your body with supportive nutrition, movement, rest, and integrative therapies that feel right for you.
-
Spirit: Connecting or reconnecting with faith, purpose, and meaning that uplifts your soul.
-
Finances: Navigating the real-world impact of treatment costs, income changes, and future planning with clarity and confidence.
Healing means engagement. You actively participate in your recovery and wellness. You make decisions aligned with your values and needs. You reclaim your power instead of waiting.
Why Language Matters: Words Shape Our Reality
Language is not neutral. The words we choose influence how we see ourselves and our journey.
Focusing only on curing can frame survivorship as something external that happens to us. Focusing on healing invites us to participate in our health — and in our wholeness and well-being.
The Takeaway
Healing is not a replacement for medical care — it complements it. It’s what happens when you take your power back, honor your whole self, and make choices that feel best for you.
And being engaged in our healing process doesn’t mean we stop praying for a cure or give up hope that a cure for breast cancer is possible.
